The bacteria begin to propagate upon immersion in fresh or salt water and disperse about every 30 minutes into the aquarium. As the bacteria colonize, they feed on organic waste breaking down the waste into ammonia, then into nitrites and then into nitrates which eventually break down into nitrogen gas through interaction with anaerobic bacteria in the tank, dissipating into the air. This process clarifies cloudy water, eliminating odors and creating a healthy environment for fish. Additionally, the volcanic rock leeches essential calcium and trace minerals back into the water.
